Cordless lawnmowers are becoming more popular due to the convenience offered by the lack of power cord. Perhaps the most restrictive aspects of a mains powered electric lawnmower are the danger of cutting through the power cord and the length of the power cord itself. Cordless battery powered lawnmowers have neither of these restrictions.
The most popular models of cordless battery powered lawnmower are the Bosch Rotak 37 Li and Rotak 43 Li. The Rotak range is a proven, well regarded selection of electric lawnmowers capable of cutting the vast majority of UK domestic lawns.
The Bosch Rotak cordless models are powered by a 36 volt lithium-ion battery (hence the Li after the model number). Lithium-ion batteries are well suited to large power tools for several reasons:
- Fast charging time (16 times faster than conventional batteries).
- Lithium-ion batteries do not self discharge when stored
- No memory effect. Many types of rechargeable battery will develop a memory after repeated part recharges meaning they will not fully recharge.
Bosch Rotak 37 Li
The Bosch Rotak 37 Li offers a cutting width of 37 cm which makes it ideal for small and medium lawns up to 300 square metres. The patented grass comb allows mowing right up to walls, fences and borders and the large grass collection box has a capacity of 40 litres.
The 36 volt lithium-ion battery is charged to 80% after 30 minutes and full capacity in one hour. Seven different cutting height positions are offered between 35-70mm. The Rotak 37 Li weighs 13.9kg.

Bosch Rotak 43 Li
The Bosch Rotak 43 Li offers a slightly wider cutting width of 43 cm and a large 50 litre grass collection box making it more suitable for larger lawns. The Rotak 43 Li comes with two lithium-ion batteries allowing mowing of areas up to 600 square metres.
The grass comb system allows you to cut grass right up to walls, fences and borders. Weighing only 14.7 kg, the Rotak 43 Li is significantly lighter than most other cordless lawnmowers.
