How do hover lawnmowers work?

Hover lawnmowers such as the Flymo use a turbine fixed above the cutting blades to produce a down force of air. This cushion of air allows the mower to float just above the surface of the lawn.

Because hover lawnmowers have no wheels or roller, they can be pushed in any direction - forwards, backwards and sideways. This can be useful when mowing lawns that feature lots of beds, borders and other obstructions.

Grass collection and hover lawnmowers

Hover lawnmowers are available with or without a grass clipping collection facility. However, this can create a dilemma. The simplest, cheapest hover lawnmowers do not collect the clippings whilst the models that do sometimes become too heavy to float effectively due to the extra weight of the clippings.

If you do decide to purchase a grass collecting model, you may have to empty the collection box before it gets full depending on how heavy and damp the grass clippings are.

Hover lawnmowers are a variation on the manual push rotary lawnmower but they won't cope with long grass as well as a conventional rotary lawnmower. However, petrol powered hover mowers are able to handle longer grass and weeds.

Using hover lawnmowers on sloping lawns.

Many gardeners decide to purchase a hover lawnmower for easy manoeuvrability on sloping ground. An electric model will cope with gentle slopes, but for more drastic terrain (30-45 degrees) a petrol powered hover mower will be required.

Hover lawnmower energy efficiency

Bear in mind that because hover mowers have no wheels, the electric motor has to work just to keep the mower off the ground in addition to cutting the grass. If you are concerned about energy efficiency but don't fancy using a manual hand lawnmower (i.e. no motor or engine), consider a small electric rotary lawnmower or an electric cylinder lawnmower.
